In 1964, physicist Peter Higgs of Edinburgh was walking in the Cairngorms when he had his famous idea about symmetry-breaking in the electroweak theory, now a key element of the standard model of particle physics. If the so-called Higgs boson is eventually detected by experiment, this will give the Cairngorms a special place in the history of science.
Hiking here someday.
Peter Ware Higgs lives somewhere in New Town, Edinburgh, about a mile away from me. It’s more than mere idle curiosity that has me wanting to find and sit on his doorstep.

According to Weiler and Ho’s theory, these singlets should have the ability to jump into an extra, fifth dimension where they can move either forward or backward in time and reappear in the future or past.
“One of the attractive things about this approach to time travel is that it avoids all the big paradoxes,” Weiler said. “Because time travel is limited to these special particles, it is not possible for a man to travel back in time and murder one of his parents before he himself is born, for example. However, if scientists could control the production of Higgs singlets, they might be able to send messages to the past or future.”

Things I’m having lately, Wales and Welsh men’s choirs, always with the science. This is the Morriston Orpheus Choir of Swansea in the control room for the Large Hadron Collider Cern singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” from Rogers and Hammerstein’s Carousel.
This movie is a crop of a time lapse movie done 14th April 2010 in Lauca national park, Chile. It shows a meteor and its persistent train pattern evolution. Bright meteors like the one captured on this movie leave a train of glowing ionized atoms in the high atmosphere that might glow for several seconds. The train is then spread by the high altitude winds. Images here were taken every 15 seconds and are shown at a speed of 5 frames per second on this time lapse movie, this train therefore last several minutes, but the high altitude and clear atmosphere at which the images were taken (5000 meters/ 16500 feet above sea level) have certainly helped to make the phenomenon visible longer than usual.
