From the Vanity Fair Paul Simon piece, Paul Simon on Kevin Youkilis, Jay-Z, Vampire Weekend—Oh, and His New Album!

Speaking of indie, are you a Vampire Weekend fan? Have you ever met those guys?

I met them. They were playing on Saturday Night Live. My son (I guess he was 16 or 17 then) wanted to go. He was a fan. He wanted to go down to see them. So I thought, Yeah, I’ll go down to see them, too. I guess I’ll go and meet them, because everybody was saying that they were taking stuff from Graceland or whatever. I felt bad. I wanted to go and tell them that I didn’t think they were taking anything. So that’s what I told them. They said, “Do you think we are?” and I said, “No, I think you’re going to the same sources that I went to. You’re drawing from the same well. You’re trying to write interesting songs.” In a way, we were on the same pursuit, but I don’t think you’re lifting from me, and anyway, you’re welcome to it, because everybody’s lifting all the time. That’s the way music grows and is shaped.

Musicians acting, actors singing. I have nothing to add to this debate. Suspension of reality can be a surprisingly fickle gift.

“Can’t say my name’s well known, you don’t see my face in Rolling Stone.”

One Trick Pony. I used to listen to this album non-stop.

Look at dear Richard Tee in this. (There’s a grace to their rock n’ roll deaths game.)

Paul Simon - The Northern Line

Paul Simon performed an anecdote and its song in a barn in Exeter in 1965. Evidently the reel-to-reel this came from contains 14 more songs.

Paul Simon and his son Harper Simon in the studio recording the song Bingo; also, video of the vinyl record making process. My life as a guitar is a series of strums and it goes a little something like this.

Paul Simon with Phoebe Snow and the Jessy Dixon Singers - Gone At Last

I’m last in the religious rolls but there’s something to be said for southern gospel music. Maybe being the son of a southern minister has something to do with it. Refer sense memories to the rousing, soulful finale of Whoopie Goldberg’s Sister Act. It and this song are as close as I get to being “back into the fold.” It’s complicated.

Anyway, Richard Tee’s piano in this gives me goosebumps(I could listen all day at high volume). And so do Paul’s lyrics and Phoebe’s amazing voice. Also, handclaps are highly underused in contemporary musics.

“I’ve had a long streak of bad luck, but I’m praying it’s gone at last”

Couldn’t believe my ears when I heard this song in a recent episode of WNYC’s Radio Lab.

“…if I hadn’tuv met you, I might still be sinkin fast”
