The Luthier by Benjamin Gauvain Hoste

A documentary short about Jack Sanders, a classical guitar builder in Los Angeles.

Paraphraseology: (Speaking of other luthiers) “there’s one aspect of their building that they can’t control. That aspect was the part of their instruments that reflects who they are as a person. Now the irony is I can hear a Gilbert guitar and know that’s a Gilbert guitar but John Gilbert probably can’t hear that aspect of his guitars they way other people can. I like the sound of my guitars, I can hear it does this or that but what makes it sound like a Jack Sander’s guitar? I can’t hear that. It’s a funny catch-22 that the thing that I was interested in, in terms of building guitars, is going to be impossible for me to ever hear.”

Richard Leo Johnson “Glidepath” - Rodeo Bar in NYC 2006 or 2007?

I first heard about this guy when I was about 14 years old and living he was in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Being only a couple hours away and having been 10 years an unofficial disciple of Leo Kottke and his music, particularly his early stuff with that muscular attack and those clangy old 12 strings, you can imagine how interested I was. Richard Leo Johnson, was a bit of a revelation. I think I had to write(real mail) him to get his first album. Nevertheless, I forgot about him until today. His newer music appears to be very interesting. There’s theremin on his album, The Poetry of Appliance. Oh, and in his other life he’s an architectural photographer.
