I’ve wanted to visit Chiloé, Chile ever since I saw Michael Palin go there. To be honest, I’d like to see all of Chile. But this house above is in Chiloé so now I want to live there in it. Honest. Punta Arenas, Tiera del Fuego, Patagonia, Atacama, Cape Horn. Such great-sounding place-names. Chile is a geographical wonderland.

Little known fact and one nearly forgotten even to myself, I like basketball. Playing it, shooting hoops, that is. Solitary repetitions at the foul line. Imaginary climatic end-game scenarios. Sneaker squeaks on a wood floor. Bouncing ball sounds echoing. The sound the net makes when you don’t catch the rim. So yeah, this floor and old school gym ceiling is awfully appealing. Not so much the peanut gallery above though.

What happens after buildings are built? Why do some buildings get better over time and others get demolished? Stewart Brand says architecture is a prediction, and all predictions are wrong, so the more monumental the architecture, the more wrong the building is. The buildings that thrive are those that can adapt to how people actually use them. The worst buildings for inhabitants are usually statement architecture — buildings that look like art. The best buildings are often non-descript, and pick up character as they evolve. In other words they grow into art.
