Angered to tears

Tonight on 60 Minutes.

Stan Brock founded the Remote Area Medical organization to bring free medicine to the Third World, where it was most needed. But increasingly, he’s finding thousands of needy patients right here in the U.S., where 47 million people have no health insurance.

On an annual budget of only a few hundred thousand dollars this organization treats about 17,000 uninsured Americans every year. They pull teeth, make eye glasses and do mammograms for people who can’t afford healthcare and who normally just go without. Just think what we could do if we really wanted a healthy population.

Beyond just the sanctity of life issues, how much fucking money do we waste every year fixing the problem after it’s gotten to be a really expensive problem? Oh, it’s bootstraps and every man for himself and if you really care about your family you’ll get yourself a better job. Well you can take that utopia and read about it in your books, there’s bugger all down here on earth.
