Slash and burn innovation

“Telecommunication companies need to go beyond just providing bandwidth and look into acquiring Internet destination sites that are heavily trafficked, says Sun Microsystems Chairman Scott McNealy. “I have explained to every telco that either you become a destination site, or the destination site will become a telco,” McNealy said at a news conference at Sun Microsystems’ Worldwide Education and Research Conference in San Francisco on Wednesday.”Slashdot

Telcos have failed miserably and I’ve agreed with what McNealy’s saying here for years. Bandwidth is a commodity at best. They’ve clung to the idea that bandwidth is a product when in reality it’s a utility like power or water. Take down the internet for a month and see what happens. My radical idea on this subject is to make these sorts of utilities and mark them non-profit and suited for a like-minded organization. If you’re in business to make vast, sustainable profits you’d better innovate beyond pumping water to faucets.
