Paul Simon with Phoebe Snow and the Jessy Dixon Singers - Gone At Last
I’m last in the religious rolls but there’s something to be said for southern gospel music. Maybe being the son of a southern minister has something to do with it. Refer sense memories to the rousing, soulful finale of Whoopie Goldberg’s Sister Act. It and this song are as close as I get to being “back into the fold.” It’s complicated.
Anyway, Richard Tee’s piano in this gives me goosebumps(I could listen all day at high volume). And so do Paul’s lyrics and Phoebe’s amazing voice. Also, handclaps are highly underused in contemporary musics.
“I’ve had a long streak of bad luck, but I’m praying it’s gone at last”
Couldn’t believe my ears when I heard this song in a recent episode of WNYC’s Radio Lab.
“…if I hadn’tuv met you, I might still be sinkin fast”
